Abstract : Abrasive flow machining(AFM)is a nontraditional finishing process that is used to deburr, polish, radius and re- move recast layer by flowing a semisolid abrasive media across the workpiece surface. This paper introduced the AFM process mechanism, the factors that affect the AFM result, the application status and the machines of AFM, the achievements and present progress of AFM research, the combination of AFM and other technios. The main conclusions of AFM are given in this paper. Abrasive flow processing is referred to as AMF, also known as extrusion honing or grinding grain flow processing in China, which is a new technology of surface polishing and deburring of workpiece with liquid viscoelastic materials (composed of polymer support and abrasive). Abrasive flow processing was independently developed by two American companies in the 1960s and was originally used for deburr processing of complex alloy geometry in the aerospace field. Since then, it has been gradually promoted and applied to other industries.
